Community

My first semester at Virginia Western Community College ended almost a month ago and I'm feeling a little nostalgic towards it already. Generally, I just call my school, "Virginia Western" because I'd like to think some people might fill in "University" or at least "College" at the end by themselves. But alas, it really is a community college. And maybe it's because I did so well my first semester, or maybe it's because I'm a huge fan of the show "Community" on NBC, but I legitimately enjoy being a student there.

I've worked my way backwards with my education in a sense. Starting out in Early College for high school and being a full time student of Guilford College so young was supposed to catapult me into the fast track for success. But, like most sixteen year olds, I was an idiot. I did well in classes, but I wasn't working towards anything. I only took classes that sounded interesting or fit into a time slot I wanted. In fact my last semester, I only had class from 8:30-12:30, Monday through Thursday. While that schedule is basically a dream come true for a high school senior, I had no major in mind, no direction to work towards.

Then, after I took a year off (one of the best decisions I ever made), I came to Southern Virginia University. I met so many wonderful people (including my husband) and had so much fun that I could never regret that decision. I still love that we live in the SVU area. But I majored in Liberal Arts, only because it was easy and I could apply so many of my credits from Guilford as transfer credits. Even graduating and getting married didn't give me any career direction. Weird, huh?

Only since I started at VWCC have I found some excitement for a career. Sure, I may talk about just looking forward to making money more than anything else, but I am so enjoying my coding program. I really think I am going to like it as a job. I also love the melting pot of people I've met. I feel like a succeed more when I'm in a more diverse classroom. And it took taking what I thought would be a step down and backward to be introduced to the right career, and school, for me.

Well, all this sentimentality aside, here are some pictures of a project I finished this week. One of my spring semester classes was Medical Terminology I, where I made hundreds of flash cards. Literally. I broke them up into prefixes, roots, suffixes, abbreviations, and vocabulary words and alphabetized them all. It took hours but now it'll be a lot easier to study and keep them fresh in my mind all summer, before I take Medical Terminology II in the fall.

Don't be fooled, all these little baggies are really thick!
